PRESIDENT'S CORNER

September is rich in American history events. On September 5, 1774 the First Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia to draw up a Declaration of Rights and Grievances against Britain. On September 9, 1776 the Second Continental Congress makes official the term “United States”. Not to be outdone, the George Washington Chapter will kick off our meetings for the new fiscal year September 16, by having dinner at Breezy Heights. Mark Black will provide a very informative presentation about 18th century men’s clothing. You won’t want to miss this evening. Also, the Board of Management will have met and planned some very exciting and interesting events for the coming year, which we will be sharing with you at the September meeting.

I would like to thank Ken Gorton for his leadership this past 18 months. In the last newsletter the many accomplishments under Ken’s leadership this past year were reviewed. Ken set the theme of Commitment, Connection and Community. As we begin planning and serving in this new fiscal year, we want to continue this theme with a strong emphasis on reaching out to our Community. We started this emphasis with a collaboration meeting with other DAR, SAR, and similar heritage and history organizations. We hope to further develop opportunities to collaborate with these organizations. On September 11, we will be represented at the Washington Community Days at Citizens Library.

This last year was successful not just because of Ken’s great leadership, but because of the dedication and service of our many compatriots. We want to continue and grow this dedication. If you haven’t attended a meeting lately, you are really missing out on good fellowship and very great programs, usually based on 18th century history. Keep an eye on our website and the newsletters for details on upcoming events. Please make an effort to join us this next year; you will be glad that you did.

The George Washington Chapter Color Guard has also been very busy representing us. On July 24th, they joined the Ohio SAR in a memorial service at Ft. Laurens. On July 31 the General Anthony Wayne and Arthur St. Clair Chapter’s Color Guard joined with us to march in the Washington Bicentennial parade. We were on numerous TV news shows, the Observer-Reporter, and the front page of the Tribune Review City & Region section. This was great publicity for the SAR and our Chapter. We also joined the Pittsburgh Chapter and the General Anthony Wayne Chapter for a grave memorial service in Oakmont the day after our Chapter picnic. If you missed the picnic, you missed a good time of fellowship. Other activities coming up for the Color Guard are listed in this newsletter. We would love to have you join us in the Color Guard. Not only is it a lot of fun, it is a great way to promote the SAR and our many patriotic goals.

We are looking for a few good men to serve as our Newsletter editor and Secretary. If you can help in either of these areas, please don’t wait to be asked. Call or email me today.

I am excited about the coming year and look forward to seeing you and our other 84 members at an activity this year.

Your Most Humble and Obedient Servant,
Ron Miller
